Avalanche Training
Safety and preparedness for Alpental's challenging backcountry terrain
The Alpental Volunteer Ski Patrol has several highly trained avalanche professionals who offer annual instruction to our members. Our training covers safety, rescue techniques, and the use of avalanche transceivers, probes, and shovels.
Anyone entering the Alpental back bowls must follow the area's back bowl policy, carry appropriate gear, and have avalanche awareness training.
We recommend that all skiers and riders complete an AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Course. To find local classes and resources, visit the Northwest Avalanche Center (NWAC).
Beacon Park at Alpental
Beacon Park is a self-directed avalanche transceiver training area near Alpental’s base area. Practice your rescue skills with single or multiple burial scenarios using your own gear. A control box tracks your search time and gives feedback.
The park is operated by Alpental B.A.R.K. and is open during the winter season, snow permitting. It’s also used by ski patrol, rescue teams, and backcountry organizations for training sessions.
Beacon Park also hosts educational classes on beacon usage, probing, shoveling, and simulated rescues. Participants learn to perform full companion rescues in under 15 minutes.
